BTU (British Thermal Unit)

The unit used to measure how much heat an air conditioner can remove from a room each hour. A small bedroom typically needs 9,000 to 12,000 BTU, while a large living room needs 18,000 BTU or more.

Tonnage

A common way Nigerian AC sellers describe capacity. One ton of cooling equals about 12,000 BTU, so a 1.5 ton unit is roughly 18,000 BTU.

SEER / EER Rating

A score that shows how efficiently an air conditioner uses electricity. A higher rating means lower running costs for the same cooling power.

Room Load Calculation

Split Unit

An air conditioner with two parts, an indoor unit mounted on the wall and an outdoor condenser connected by refrigerant piping. It is the most common type installed in Nigerian homes.

Window Unit

A single, self contained air conditioner that fits into a window or a hole in the wall. Cheaper to install than a split unit but usually louder and less efficient.

Inverter AC

An air conditioner whose compressor adjusts its speed instead of switching fully on and off. This keeps the room at a steady temperature and can cut electricity use significantly.

VRF / VRV System

Variable Refrigerant Flow systems that cool multiple rooms or floors from one outdoor unit, commonly used in offices, hotels and larger commercial buildings.

Refrigerant (Gas)

The fluid inside an air conditioner that absorbs heat from indoor air and releases it outside. Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons an AC blows warm.

Condenser Coil

The part of the outdoor unit that releases heat collected from inside the room. A dirty condenser coil forces the compressor to work harder and raises your electricity bill.

Capacitor

A small electrical component that helps start and run the compressor and fan motor. A failed capacitor is one of the most common reasons an AC will not turn on.

AC Servicing

Routine cleaning of filters and coils, a gas pressure check, and a general inspection, usually recommended every three to six months in Nigeria's dusty and humid climate.
